Splice the mainbrace = to have a drink (usually more than one).
Scurvy = (1) A deficiency disease which often afflicted sailors; caused by lack of vitamin C. (2) A derogatory adjective.
Hornswaggling = cheating.
Sprogs = untrained recruits.
